Roadtrip

I'm not sure what I was thinking. I'm wondering if it is too late to turn back.

It was only eight hours to St. Louis, as far as we wanted to go today. Ten hours later we are stopped for the night in a hotel in the middle of Nowheresville, Illinois, still several hours from St. Louis. I could do some math and figure out our exact rate of efficiency. Or I could just put on my Captain Obvious costume and say, "Wow, that took way longer than it should have."

Right now, I'm sure Bill is at home having a big old party for his week of no kids and no 2am feedings. I, on the other hand, still hear ringing in my ears from the hours and hours of crying and Wheels on the Bus songs. I'm going to go curl up in a fetal position in a corner of the sweltering hot hotel room and rock myself to sleep.

This about sums how all of us felt at the end of the really long day:

All except for the surprise winner of the "Last Man Standing" contest:

Bailey got to the hotel and was ready to get her party on. Too bad no one else was.

Tomorrow we head back out on the road, along with my mom, two of my sisters, and my sister's four kids. I'm not sure I can be talked back into the car again. Well, maybe for the sake of having brilliant blogging material for the weeks ahead. I'll think about it.

Ah yes car journeys - can be the most fun or the most depressing times of your life as a parent! Our current fav game is 'first one to see' . . . an elephant (my 2-year-old), Doctor Who (my 5-year-old), our destination (a desperate me!)

Just wait until the're older! "She touched me!" "MOM!" in a winey voice. "How much longer?" "I have to go potty!!"

That picture of your daughter passed out on the bed is hilarious - so cute! And I know all about those little party animals - my daughter would stay up all night if I'd let her!

Congrats on your SITS pick! :)

There for a second I thought you were doing this alone, and I thought, "Man, this chick is c.r.a.z.y!!!"
St. Louis has so much free stuff to do! Bonus!

Congratulations on the SITS post. Blog is great. Cute little girls you got there. I have been on road trips with 2 little ones. And I am ashamed to say I can offer you no advice how to deal with the crying. Earplugs maybe?

You're a hoot! Your posts have me rolling and I can't wait to read more! I so remember the "road trip" days when my kids were that young...now it's the bickering back in forth in the back seat. sigh...Congrats on being the featured SITS blog!

WOW!!

You are much braver than I. I told my husband there was no way I was driving to FL last time we went. It was flying or nothing. Four kids in a car that long? Not a chance.

Congrats on the SITS featured blog!

Another SITS sister checking in. Your girls are beautiful! And love your road trip story! We roadtripped from Milwaukee to St. Louis last year in August. My god, the heat! It was 108 degrees when we arrived in STL. We must have been nuts. But staying in a hotel with a pool on the roof was pretty darn cool.

Hey there--I'm here via SITS...did you say you took your kids on a road trip WITHOUT YOUR HUSBAND?! I am awed by your bravery! My kids are 8 & 11 and I still don't feel ready to do that!

I'm visiting from SITS. You are so much braver than I to travel with 2 under 2! We road tripped 10 hours from home when my oldest was 7 months old and it was MISERABLE. I vowed never to do it again, but survived another trip, this time with 2 under 3 in tow. Much better experience. Good luck!

I can almost hear the "are we nearly there yet?"s ringing in my ears!!! We have a 5 hour car journey with our two (4 yrs and 21 mths) next week and I am not looking forward to it one bit.

On the positive side.... at least neither one of yours puked in the car. See, always a silver lining ;)

Hope the rest of your trip is uneventful (in the travel incident sense) and timely.

I think what I enjoyed most in this post was seeing those little chubby legs laid out on that hotel room bed. I was referring to Reagan's legs, mom, not yours - don't worry.
Thanks for posting as many pics of your kids as I do. Isn't that what blogs are for???
Good to meetcha.

Thank you for reaffirming my insistance on not spending more than 4 hours in a car. I am so in awe of your will to take this trek. Good luck!
