Mama Kat's Giving Away a Hoover

Yes, that's right. She's giving away an awesome new Hoover vacuum. Go enter yourself here.

I already own a Hoover. It's awesome. But it is 17 years old. I paid $99 for it in 1991. Best $99 I ever spent. It still runs and looks brand new. Maybe that's because it spent most of its life in a safe protected closet not being forced to work. But that was before I had kids and before I've been without a housekeeper for six months. Now that baby gets some serious use. I can speak from experience that it can inhale an entire box of Honey Nut Cheerios in just one swipe.

About the same time I bought my vacuum, my Mom bought a Kirby from a door-to-door salesman. If you're a door-to-door salesman, just go to my Mom's house. She'll buy your stuff from you. Encyclopedias, magazines, wrapping paper, vacuums, beef steak of the month club, whatever, she just can't say no. Anyway, she paid about $900 for this glamorous top of the line Kirby. It was even supposed to fluff your couch cushions, sand your tables, and blow up your beach balls for the pool. Of course she never used it to sand or to blow up beach balls, just vacuum. And it didn't really do that very well. And where is that Kirby now? It's been dead for about a decade. Some investment that was.

Maybe it's high time for Mama to upgrade? My current vacuum actually even still uses vacuum bags. Do you know how hard it is to find vaccum bags these days? Even the cheapo vacuums are bagless now. I think my current Hoover should be bound for the Smithsonian while I upgrade with a new one I'll be winning from Mama Kat.

On the off chance I don't win that vacuum, let's hear your recommendations? Is everyone still drinking the kool-aid and loving their Dysons? Or does the Dyson go the way of the Kirby after a few years of use? Does your vacuum blow up beach balls? Sand tables? Clean a fish tank? Have any other "special" talents?

**guilty here**

I have one of those high priced Kirby's here. We couldn't say no either. It does TONS of things and it works amazingly for the day-to-day things too. We figure it should last us all of our child(ren)'s years in our home and then some! lol

My vacuum was around $300 - bought it in 2002. It so doesn't work anymore and I'm sad. :( My parents bought a Dyson and I LOVE IT!...I also borrow it all the time! hahaha

I don't have much to say about my vacuum. We don't have much of a relationship.

We have a 10 year old Hoover that still takes bags. It has always worked very well - according to my husband who actually uses it. So, I don't have any advice other than stock up on bags.

We had an Electrolux canister vac that my mom bought from a door ro door guy when I was about 3. I sucked up a bowl of water with about 6 months later, and amazingly, it survived. My sister ran over the hose with a 1970 Chevy Nova too. I think my dad still has it.

We have 2 Dysons. Because my housekeeper didn't want to lug the heavy one up the stairs. We give her whatever she wants. She is the only reason I have not been committed. So, all I know about them is that she loves them. She loves them, I love them...

Ooo, I'm stealing any advice you have as I'm ummm having my own non-sucky vacuum issues. I didn't realize that bags were no longer the norm. Thankfully I still have a small supply.

I do have to ask though... you were joking about blowing up the beach balls and all, right? I don't do door to door people. I make them go away. My husband even sends me to the door when he's home :)

She's totally not joking about the beach balls. (though I don't think they sand. . .) I have to admit to having bought a Kirby too. It's big and heavy and I've broken several toenails on it. . . BUT it picks things up very well, and it's a dang quick way to inflate an air mattress or clean the carpets when your husband spills neon blue things on it. . . I'm just saying.

"special talents"... mine is really good at sitting still and quiet in the closet.

My favorite line is Hoover. My mom and I used to use my great-grandmother's Hoover vacuum cleaner before we could afford a more updated one. This one was a road construction orange canister vac with 3 attachments. We even still found the vacuum bags at Wal-Mart. Let me tell you, that thing could CLEAN! We have a hoover now...upright bagless. If I had it to do over again, I'd go with bags. It's cleaner, doesn't expose you back to the crud you just spent all that time vacuuming up, you don't have to clean the bag, and most bags these days have an air filtration built into the bag construction, so it's kind of like installing a fresh filter each time.

We have a dyson which works really well. My mil has the rainbow (I think that is what it is called) and I actually think it works better. It was bought from a door to door salesman. You have to add water to it and it really sucks the grime and dirt out of carpet. It isn't a shampooer just so you know. It works better but is messier because of the water.
So in conclusion I would go with the dyson.

I got a Dyson when Target was having the $100 gift cards with a purchase. We're pretty fond of it. It does have great suction and picks up all my kids nastiness.

It will clog (just cause we have THAT much crap) but it is very easy to clean. All the pieces come on and off really easily.

Now, I'm speaking of when I DO use it, mind you.

The Dyson is awful. It DOES lose suction and falls apart and I've already had to take mine to be repaired to the tune of $100. I've had it for 2 years. Don't buy a Dyson.

We have the Kirby and it's so heavy. I let DH do all the vacuuming since he's the one who wanted it. Works out fine for me!

We have a Kirby which the hubby bought from a door-to-door salesman after we got married 12 years ago. It vacuums great and is awesome for blowing up air mattresses. And it's my kids favorite to vacuum with because it's self-propelled. It supposedly does carpets, but I leave that to Stanley Steamer. However, it's SOOO heavy that no one ever hauls it upstairs or can manage to vacuum the stairs with it, so we had to get another vacuum to do the upstairs with anyway.

So we've got some commercial something or another that my hubby got from his late father for upstairs. However, if you've ever seen my upstairs (which belongs to my 4 kids under 10 years old), you would know that one doesn't get used much either....
